“Abra Kadabra” - Magically Transform Your Small Bathroom into a Larger One

Twinkle your nose, click together the heels of your magic red slippers, utter the word "presto" while waving your arms in the air and before your very eyes your small bathroom will magically appear bigger. No? Well, it was worth a try….You may feel that you have no other choice but to tear down walls and rebuild your bathroom in order to make it bigger. But we are here to tell you that with a little imagination and maybe a little optical magic, you can create a more spacious bathroom without the mess of ripping down the walls.

Your bathroom lighting can truly play a big part in the perception of space and make your bathroom appear larger than it actually is. If you combine natural and artificial light, you can get even better results. Consider using a few small light sources in the ceiling instead of getting your artificial light from one or two big sources. You can also try mixing more lamps for more of an effect. If at all possible, try to find ways to get the natural light in. This can be accomplished by skylights, roof windows or bigger windows to allow in the sunlight. Something fun to consider with lighting is installing colored lights in areas that you want to stand out.

Mirrors are a very effective way to make your bathroom look bigger. Put up a mirror that can cover an entire wall. To get an even “bigger” effect, you can combine two or more mirrors on opposite walls.

A little paint can go a long way in creating a larger looking bathroom. You should apply light, warm colors. Unless you have your heart set on an all sterile white bathroom, you should try to steer away from all white. However, you should consider light colored walls and floors. A combination of pale colors will look great together. You can use wallpaper or tiles on the walls to add more texture, and this will help make up the small space. Also, if tiles are your style, add big ones and small ones together to create a more open space. Shelves made inside the wall can really help to add space to the bathroom.

Instead of wider cabinets, use your wall space and install thin and long cabinets. You can also put in a shelving unit that goes above the toilet to better utilize the space.

Less and smaller is better. You need more room, so don’t fill up the space if you don’t have to. It will just make it too crowded. Change out the big vanity for a smaller one. Any cabinets you are not using, donate to someone or use elsewhere. Anything you do not need in the bathroom, find another place for it. Throw out the “big” and bring in the “small”.

Remember that a small bathroom will not truly get bigger, even if you can find ways to make it appear bigger. If you truly need the space, then it may be time to knock out the walls. It may not be as expensive as you might think.

These tips can be used by anyone who has a smaller bathroom and wants to try to create the look of a more spacious one. Before you grab that hammer and tear down those walls, try these helpful hints and see if you can magically make your bathroom bigger!
